Lesson Learning Outcomes

After completion of this lesson, learners will:

Understand the different types of plastic materials and their properties.

Learners will recognise the classification of plastic materials. They will develop the ability to distinguish between thermoplastics, thermosets and bioplastics, and understand their chemical structures and physical properties.
Learners will recognise the analysis of material properties. They will understand the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of various plastic types and how these influence their applications.

Identify various manufacturing technologies used in plastic production.

Learners will be able to recognise manufacturing technologies. They will become familiar with key plastic processing methods, such as injection moulding, extrusion, blow moulding, thermoforming and 3D printing.
Learners will recognise the process-property relationships. They will learn to relate manufacturing techniques to material behaviour and product performance.

Analyze the environmental impact of plastic materials and manufacturing processes.

Learners will recognise the concept of life cycle thinking. They will develop the skills needed to evaluate the environmental impact of plastic materials throughout their lifecycle.
Learners will recognise and develop sustainable alternatives. They will develop an understanding of biodegradable plastics, recycling technologies and the principles of the circular economy in plastics. Will develop critical thinking skills through hands-on activities and discussions.

Evaluate the sustainability of different plastic materials and manufacturing methods

Learners will recognise the Impact Assessment. They will develop the skills needed to critically assess the sustainability of different plastic materials and manufacturing methods.
They will also recognise the importance of problem solving. They will learn to suggest ways to reduce the environmental impact of plastic production and use.
