University-civil society cooperation – social projects and lifelong learning

Overview of the contents

This section discusses the idea of the university’s third mission.

The Third Mission of universities emphasises their expanding role in society beyond teaching and research. Social projects and lifelong learning help universities and the community.

The Third Mission comprises research, technology transfer, innovation, and university engagement in social and cultural life. These include continuous education, workshops, and worldwide projects on economic development, environmental challenges, healthcare, and minority integration.

This mission fulfils universities’ essential function, promoting social cohesion, regional development, and national competitiveness. It develops society, diversifies income sources, and transfers knowledge and technology to various organisations through social, entrepreneurial, and inventive aspects. The Third Mission emphasises universities’ responsibility to society, lifelong learning, and innovative social and economic development. The South East European University (SEEU) example is presented in the section. The university applies interactive multimedia learning tools, learning management systems, and the Flipping Learning Model to improve student-centred learning. In conjunction with UNESCO, the Centre for Cultural Interaction and Communication (CCID), the university promotes academic and project-based aims through intercultural communication.
