Welcome to the ESG4HE Course
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues are increasingly shaping how organisations understand their responsibilities, manage risks, identify opportunities and plan for long-term sustainable development. ESG is therefore not only about reporting or compliance. It is about integrating sustainability into the way organisations think, decide and act.
This course has been designed to provide you with a practical and structured introduction to ESG. Through 10 interconnected modules, you will gradually move from understanding the foundations of ESG to assessing ESG performance, identifying risks and opportunities, engaging stakeholders, setting priorities, developing actions and monitoring progress.
The course combines knowledge with application. Rather than simply learning ESG concepts, you will be encouraged to consider how to apply them in real organisations and real decision-making situations.
Your Learning Journey
The 10 modules form a progressive learning pathway. Throughout the course, you will explore:
- the foundations of ESG and sustainable development;
- environmental, social and governance dimensions of organisational performance;
- ESG risks and opportunities;
- stakeholders and materiality;
- ESG assessment and identification of priority areas;
- development of appropriate ESG actions and improvement measures;
- indicators and monitoring of ESG performance;
- examples and case studies showing ESG practices in real organisations;
- the use of digital tools to support ESG assessment and decision-making; and
- the integration of ESG knowledge into a practical improvement process.
The modules are designed to complement each other. For this reason, we recommend following them in the proposed sequence, particularly if ESG is a new topic for you.
How to Study Each Module
Each module combines several learning activities. A typical learning sequence is:
Learning outcomes → Video presentation → Presentation slides → Learning content and readings → Short reflections and case examples → Interactive activity → Review questions → Quiz
Start by reviewing the learning outcomes so that you know what you are expected to achieve.
Watch the video presentation for an overview of the key ideas and use the PowerPoint presentation to revisit the main concepts.
Continue with the learning content and readings, where the topics are explained in greater depth. Short reflections and examples will help you connect the concepts with organisational practice.
The interactive activity will then guide you through the practical application of the process or approach introduced in the module.
At the end, use the open review questions to reflect on what you have learned and complete the quiz to check your understanding.
Learning by Applying ESG
Throughout the course, try to relate the content to a real organisation whenever possible. Ask yourself:
What does this mean for our organisation? Where are our main ESG strengths and gaps? What should we improve? What actions could we realistically take?
This approach will help you move beyond knowing ESG terminology towards being able to apply ESG thinking in practice.
By the end of the course, you should have a clearer understanding of how an organisation can move through an ESG improvement cycle:
Understand → Assess → Identify → Prioritise → Act → Monitor → Improve
The ultimate goal of the course is not simply to learn about ESG, but to develop the ability to use ESG principles, tools and evidence to support more sustainable, responsible and informed organisational decisions.
Welcome to the course, and we wish you a successful ESG learning journey.
